Sustainability Meets Fashion – About Bloody Time It Hit Mainstream

There are debates, guesses and disbelief at the immense size of the patch of plastic reportedly floating in the middle of the pacific ocean. Many studies paid by universities concurring that it is real and it is huge and getting bigger. A particular study even suggest that it is three times the size of France. Yes, there’s a patch of plastic in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii that is larger than a country. It aint big but think of it this way, this patch of floating plastic is bigger than South Africa or Egypt. Heck one could technically go and conquer this piece of island and declare it a proper country.

It’s a scary thought but there’s good news though with all this reality check – fashion leaders in the industry are making their ware using recycled materials. Adidas, has start making their famous Ultra Boost X Parley using, your guessed right – recycled plastic. It’s a nice idea, really. Not only is this putting lesser demand on natural resources but we’re reusing waster materials. Other fashion brands has start sewing in the same trend and manufacturing their new lines of clothes using recycled plastic bottles. These companies are paving way for future alternative business and funding (I hope) projects like The Ocean Cleanup to start reclaming all this junk that we have stuffed in to the oceans.

This by far isn’t the best solution as we’re now introducing another product that is hard to recycle, and the general fashionista throws out clothes as much as they buy them with each new season.

It isn’t perfect, but it is a start towards rethinking consumerism.
