3D Printing and Manufacturing Power to Consumers

It takes a lot of imagination and courage to try and change the world. Either you have that, or some artistic skill, some ingenuity and some music to change the world a video view at a time – as depicted by Kati Hyyppä in her latest weaving machine made from recycled parts.

At a glance one would question the feasibility of this – that’s an awesome lot of work for weave a piece of fabric. One would need to locate the necessary hardware, with the right specs and still retaining a solid build quality, a bit of Pi programming skills to get this. It is quite a bit of work to reuse and manufacture something out of a refuse.

It has the right idea.

A major contribution to the massive waste problem that we’re encountering is consumerism and consumption. Rampant consumerism is growing into a problem that we cannot solve in time. Unless we don’t mind living in a junk-filled world like Wall-e, we need to change the way we live radically. Due to cost efficiency and bottom-line, mass production is required to ensure you can sustain the business that you’re running to provide goods and services to the world. What if we take a step back, and instead of selling consumers final products and goods – we allow to them to manufacture what they need.

Imagine a world where replicators using 3D printing technology is available in every household, allowing everyone to 3d print the things they need on a daily basis such as toilet paper, phone cases, takeaway food containers, etc. This system, coupled with a resource feeding system that is easy to use, clean, maintain and manage would be the perfect replicator unit for all households. We all remember the replicator that was used in Star Trek TNG, and also made its apprearace in the latest Star Trek Discovery. It will not happen in the next 2 years, but hey it only took 3D printing to start becoming mainstream in the past 4 years. With the right motivation – anything can happen in this world 🙂
